How much coif feed per day? Why fish length and temperature are important

How much koi food do koi need daily?

A common question is: How many grams of food should my koi get per day? The answer depends on the total population and the conditions in the pond. Just the number of fish is not enough for this.

Consider size and number together
Ten young koi with a length of 20 centimeters require a different total amount than ten adult koi with a length of 65 centimeters. The total weight would be a useful calculation, but in a private koi pond it is hardly directly measurable.

Fish length as a practical approximation value
Waist holders can often estimate the approximate body length well. From this, the total weight can be approximated using a model assumption. Because body build and fitness vary greatly, this calculation remains uncertain. It is not a scale.

Water temperature and activity
Koi respond as warm-blooded fish to water temperature. With warm water and good metabolism, they can generally eat more actively than at low temperatures. Strong fluctuations and poor water quality are reasons to adjust feeding.

Always check the feeding amount
Observe whether the entire portion is consumed quickly, whether individual animals do not get access to the feed, and whether feed remains in the pond. The available filter performance and oxygen supply also limit the appropriate ration.

Example
For twelve koi with an average length of approximately 45 centimeters, the feed advisor should first calculate an approximate total weight and then include the temperature. The result is a starting orientation, not the daily fixed amount required.

Conclusion
A good feeding calculation takes into account temperature, fish stock and feeding goal – and remains always verifiable. Our JPD feed advisor on the test page is being further developed for this purpose.
